Eagle Achievement Center
Coppin State University

JMT Architecture is providing programming, design, and construction administration services for the Eagle Achievement Center (EAC) at Coppin State University. The EAC will create a welcoming ‘one-stop-shop’ with multiple student services. JMT’s proposed design solutions erode physical and perceived barriers to these services by creating an accessible and supportive environment rather than the more traditional, transactional experience typically encountered by students. The plan mixes offices and meeting spaces with lounges to encourage collaborative engagement across a spectrum of centralized services.

Elements of the design solution include a high degree of inward and outward transparency to aid wayfinding, encourage campus community interactions, and infuse the space with daylight. Open lounges are situated at existing window walls to connect students to the Coppin campus and the greater city while allowing daylight to penetrate offices and meeting areas through glass partitions. Variety is introduced through a range of ceiling heights, finish materials, colors, and lighting to ensure the space is welcoming memorable, and accommodating. The Coppin ‘brand’ is reinforced through murals, graphics, and color.

A thoughtful, sustainable, and encompassing approach to the contemporary design of the Eagle Achievement Center will create a desired ‘heart’ of the campus community and a vital part of student’s academic and social success.
