Nice Middleton Campus Facilities

JMT Architecture provided architectural design services for the new campus facilities that support the new Harry W. Nice – Thomas “Mac” Middleton Bridge, US 301, in Newburg, Maryland.  MDTA underwent a major replacement of the Nice-Middleton Bridge that crosses the Potomac River between Newburg, MD and Dahlgren, VA.  It was discovered that necessary operational and maintenance functions would be affected because of the bridge improvement project, therefore, a design for the campus improvements was required.

The new facilities were designed, as outlined in the master plan, that included a replacement police and administration building, a new maintenance building, a new 7-bay vehicle storage building, and small office addition to the existing automotive repair shop.  All of the buildings need to have a matching masonry veneer, aluminum storefront, and standing seam metal roof to create the campus aesthetic.

The new one-story, 12,400 SF police and administration building houses the MdTA Police, E-ZPass administration, and bridge administration and replaces the former MdTA police office.  It contains office and meeting rooms, locker rooms, and holding cells for the MdTA police, public service counters and support offices for the E-ZPass administration, and offices and storage for the bridge administration.

The two-story, 8,700 SF maintenance building houses small equipment repairs shops, staff offices, locker rooms, and parts storage.  The second floor includes additional storage and mechanical space.

The one-story, 6,500 SF, 7-bay vehicle storage building includes six vehicle storage bays and one separated bay for front-end loader storage.

The 400 SF office addition at the existing automotive shop replaces existing modular offices located in a service bay.

The four buildings and site design required comprehensive coordination with the Design-Build Bridge Replacement Project to integrate the new work and provide minimum interruptions to the current facility’s daily operations.
